Showing God in Your Life
Remember how much you wanted mom and dad’s approval growing up? Did you get? Do you remember how you felt? Do you find any connection with your current desire to be approved by God as a child in His Kingdom? Jesus is approached by some parents who want him to bless their children. What can we learn about receiving God’s approval in our spiritual life? As a parent, how much would you like Jesus to come and bless your children?
U Matthew 19:13-22; Mark 10:13-22; Luke 18:15-23, Jesus had just taught his audience about God’s plan for marriage and the dangers of divorce. Now He takes a moment to speak about an example that children can teach us about God’s life. Then the rich and young ruler asks Jesus a valuable question about wealth and eternal life. He also exemplifies how we can find God’s favor. Can we buy our way into eternal life? How can I show God’s presence in my life?
Take God’s blessing – Matthew 19:13; Mark 10:13-14; Luke 18:15-16
Jesus spends some time in Perea before going to Jerusalem to be crucified. While there, some parents bring their young children to Him for a blessing. They believe that Jesus’ blessing would be something very useful for their child. The apostles do not think that children are important enough to take up Jesus’ time. So they tell parents and children to go away and leave Jesus alone.
We all want God to love and bless us and we are always grateful when we can feel His blessing on our children. We want it to make their life and our life easier and better and to protect us from harm, evil, disease and discomfort. Please, God, make me and me healthy and prosperous. If you will not help me, please spare my children the pain and suffering I have to endure. We believe that God will, to some extent, help us in the areas of this physical and emotional life. How much do you care about God blessing you spiritually?
Trust God – Matthew 19:14-15; Mark 10:15-16; Luke 18:17
Jesus rebukes the apostles for treating children and their parents with such disrespect. He then takes the children and uses them to teach an important lesson about God. He calls them models for believers. Children have a simple trust and obedience that should be an example and a challenge to the rest of us. The kingdom of God belongs to them because of their simple trust. Not because they did anything to earn or deserve it. Likewise, our salvation is based on our faith in Jesus, not on how good we were or how hard we worked to earn God’s blessing.
It’s easy to trust God when things are going well, but can you trust Him when things are going wrong? Do you sincerely believe that God can guide and provide for you, or do you still think that you must earn His favor by doing many good deeds? Trusting God to save you from your sins and guide your life as simply as a child trusts his mother and father is an example of true godliness. How much do you trust God in every aspect of your life?
Do good deeds – Matthew 19:16-20; Mark 10:18-19; Luke 18:18-20
Jesus begins his journey after blessing the children when a rich young ruler asks him what he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus first challenges him because he called Jesus “good.” No one is good but God. Therefore, by calling Jesus good, he acknowledges that Jesus and God are one. In this remark, Jesus also challenges him to obey all the commandments in the Old Testament law. The ruler tries to justify himself by asking what laws Jesus is referring to. Jesus responds by quoting several of the Ten Commandments.
Good deeds will not earn you any favor from God, but they will protect you from sin. When we are busy choosing what is right, we are more likely to say no to temptation. However, all the good works in the world will not counteract the one sin we have committed. Good deeds show that we love God and strive to follow Him, but they do not save us from the consequences of our bad deeds. Why do you do what you do?
Real wealth – Matthew 19:21-22; Mark 10:20-22; Luke 18:21-23
Jesus follows the man’s response as a sincere effort to be a godly man. Jesus develops a love for this man’s sincerity, but gives him another vital test to show where his heart really is on the matter. Does he love God enough to give up everything he owns and follow Jesus? Is his wealth more of a god to him than his relationship with God? This causes the man to leave very sad because of the amount of wealth he must be willing to give away. He worked hard for it and earned every bit of it. Giving it up is a really demanding test.
Everyone wants more money. We believe that greater wealth will give us greater freedom (until we have it). Greater wealth brings greater responsibility. However, all the money in the world will not buy one second of eternal life in heaven. There are a number of natural disasters and man-made events that could remove all of our wealth and possessions in a matter of moments. Then our wealth would be reduced to nothing. In fact, when we die, all our wealth will be left behind. If we do not have Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we have nothing. The real wealth is what we have in our relationship with Jesus Christ.
God bless you and have a nice week!
