"Robby" Starring Warren Raum and Ryp Siani
“Robby” is a low-budget Robinson Crusoe-like film from 1968. It stars two relatively unknown actors: Warren Raum and Ryp Siani. Raum plays ten-year-old “Robbie”, a boy stranded on an island. As he wanders the island in search of food and shelter, and hopefully parents, he comes across a naked newborn boy whom he names “Friday”.
Although it is never revealed quite how long Robby stays on the island before being rescued, it must be assumed that it is several months as Friday is able to learn English during his time with him. While Robby teaches him English, how to play “cowboy and Indian” and the importance of wearing clothes, Friday teaches his new friend how to gather food, how to fish and how to swim.
As the two boys grew up in completely different cultures (Robby in America and Friday on the island), we see that they have two completely different attitudes towards clothing. Friday roams the island completely naked; completely unfettered. Robbie, aged nine, is too big to “run around without any pants on”, and can’t understand why his mother would let him walk around naked on a Friday.
By the time the two boys are rescued by a lone sailor (it’s never clearly explained why the man sailed to this island), Friday is speaking English quite well and Robby has lost all his inhibitions. The two boys are best friends and have learned many valuable lessons from each other.
Although the acting and story are not that great in this movie, it is still a watchable movie. A good look at how children can quickly adapt to new situations and quickly make new friends.
