For anyone who does not have the condition of psoriasis, it would seem ridiculous to suggest that they deserve to suffer from the condition. However, during a study I conducted on the effects of hypnotherapy on psoriasis, this is one of the key beliefs I found people with psoriasis had.

What is psoriasis? Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin condition. There are nine types, each with unique signs and symptoms. Plaque psoriasis is the most common type of psoriasis and the only one that I have been able to influence so far. About 80% of people who develop psoriasis have plaque psoriasis, which looks like patches of raised, reddish skin covered with opaque scales. These spots, or plaques, often form on the elbows, knees, scalp and lower back. However, plaques can appear anywhere on the body.

Researchers believe that psoriasis is an immune-mediated condition. This means that the condition is caused by faulty signals in the body’s immune system. Psoriasis is believed to develop when the immune system tells the body to overreact and accelerate the growth of skin cells. Normally, skin cells mature and shed from the surface of the skin every 28 to 30 days. When psoriasis develops, skin cells mature in 3 to 6 days and move to the surface of the skin. Instead of shedding, skin cells build up, causing visible lesions. I believe that by using hypnotherapy what the client can do is to correct those false signals. There is good evidence to show that hypnotherapy can have a significant effect on psoriasis.

Psoriasis usually causes discomfort. The skin often itches, may crack and bleed. In severe cases, the itching and discomfort can keep a person awake at night, and the pain can make everyday tasks difficult.

In my previous article, “Psoriasis is an Angry Man’s Game,” I described the study, the results, and another trait common to the client with psoriasis, anger. However, in this article I want to discuss a common belief among psoriasis clients, which is that “I’m not good enough.” This is a common belief held by almost all psoriasis clients I have worked with over the years. They believe, deep down on a subconscious level, for one reason or another, that they have done something wrong. This develops into a belief that “I’m not good enough,” which eventually translates into a belief that they deserve that condition. To an outsider looking at this, it would seem bizarre. However, consider a young child, say a five-year-old girl, whose parents have split up and her dad has been suddenly taken away. What is that child thinking? It’s a fair bet that she will be very upset and in trying to figure out what happened to her world (given her limited understanding of the world and its complexity), she may feel that SHE did something wrong, which is why dad left. In turn, this leads to feelings of guilt and low self-worth. Hence the “I’m not good enough” syndrome is born.

Psoriasis often develops after such an event. Of course, it then follows quite naturally that the child connects the two to an even greater fictitious belief that because she wasn’t ‘good enough’, God, Santa or whoever gave her this horrible, itchy, scaly skin. Most adults would naturally reject this belief structure. However, we are talking about a small child with very limited processing capabilities; for her it is a direct cause and effect: “I deserve it and here it is!”

Okay, now this child has a belief, what happens as she grows up? Is her self-esteem improving? Very unlikely! What would you expect to happen when she does PE at school with scales on her elbows or in her hair? Do you imagine other children will understand and positively encourage her? Of course not! Names like scab and snakeskin make her even more ashamed and teach her to hide it, reducing her worth even lower. This will continue for the rest of her life unless someone steps in and tells her subconscious mind to “STOP” these destructive thought processes and begin reversing the cycle so the healing can begin.

Many people are unaware of the automatic functions of the subconscious mind. It simply means that if the process is repeated often enough, almost regardless of the outcome, this ‘thinking’ develops into an automatic process. This is because the subconscious mind does not have a critical factor, meaning it does not examine behavior or thinking to determine whether or not it is beneficial to the client.

Hypnotherapy is truly the most direct and effective way to change subconscious thinking; within therapeutic patterns thinking and behavior can be improved to facilitate helpful solutions. Often this process is both surprising for the client and effortless for them.

Belief in the benefits of hypnotherapy is not necessary to change behavior. Many clients I have dealt with either have not been able to understand the connection between the way we think and the way our body reacts, or tend to think of ‘hypnosis’ as something they saw on television, which to them is not relevant. . Hypnotherapy works independently and apart from the client’s critical intellectual assessment, which often presents a ‘big surprise’.
