Fear of Loud Noises – How to Overcome Fear of Noise

From timber wolves, to chameleons, to domesticated cats, most animals seem to be instinctively afraid of loud noises. People are no different. There is an obvious evolutionary reason for this. The senses of animals are tuned to what is loud and bright. Indeed, that statement itself is redundant: stimuli that are “loud” and “bright” are just those stimuli that overload our senses. In nature, a sudden overload of the senses usually signifies some threat to our lives. Think of an elephant honking in warning before charging; or a heavy, thousand-year-old tree that makes a thunderous sound as it falls to the ground, shattering everything below. However, in some people, this instinctive reaction to loud sudden noises can turn into a full-blown phobia. This can become a problem. Do you almost panic every time you see someone about to pop a balloon? If so, you might wonder if there is a way to simply stop the fear. No one enjoys living in fear of ordinary things.

The psychology of fear

Most people who have a phobia of loud noises fear the suddenness and unpredictability of the noise as much as its loudness. There is something about surprise that is evolutionarily programmed to get our hearts racing. A classic example of this is when children (or adults) sneak up on each other and say, “Boo!”. No one likes to be caught off guard. Repeated startling like this, including in childhood, especially by people with ill intent (eg from bullies at school) can lead to the development of a phobia.

One fear leads to another

After being startled like this repeatedly, the child may develop a tendency to cringe permanently at the slightest sound. This can lead to a number of other social problems: extreme shyness, social anxiety, inability to take initiative in groups, low self-esteem, fear of change and fear of taking risks. In extreme cases, the fear of sudden, startling sounds can make people unable to sleep. Those suffering from extreme noise phobia have been known to lie awake at night, frightened and anticipating every car that passes the window, every maddening, hourly rendition of the neighbor’s cuckoo clock.

Stop the fear of noise with NLP

Fortunately, if you suffer from severe noise phobias, there are techniques to retrain your mind to think differently. Using the discipline of NLP (neuro-linguistic programming), you can train your mind to calm down and relax, and to stop expecting sudden noise. You probably already know, rationally, that there’s nothing wrong with loud noises. By combining NLP and hypnotherapy techniques, you can finally force your seemingly incorrigible, unconscious mind to internalize this knowledge.

Stop repetitive thinking

The most severe phobias, including this one, take the form of a thought loop that repeats itself over and over again (eg, “I’m going to hear a terrible, loud noise, it’s going to be scary”). That’s why fear is ultimately so boring: who likes to think the same thought over and over again, against their will? This is why these phobias respond so well to NLP. NLP techniques teach you to consciously recognize these repetitive thoughts and replace them with better thoughts. Chances are, after a few sessions of NLP and hypnotherapy, you will never be afraid of loud noises again.
