Rock Your World – The Irish Way
In the fall of 1976 in Doolin, Ireland, musicians Paul David Hewson (Bono), David Howell Evans (The Edge), Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen, Jr. formed a band called “Feedback”. The then 14-year-old Mullen posted an ad on his high school’s bulletin board announcing the need for musicians to form a band. The announcement resulted in the formation of a four-member band that was first called “Feedback”. Soon after, the band changed their name to “The Hype”. Eighteen months later, the band changed their name again to “U2”.
In March 1978, U2 performed in a talent show held in Limerick, Ireland. One of the judges for the competition was Jackie Hayden from CBS Records. U2 won the talent competition with a prize of £500. Hayden was so impressed with the band that he gave U2 studio time to record their demo tape.
In September 1979, U2 released their first single, U2:3, which reached the top of the Irish charts. During the month of December of the same year, the band went to London and held their first show outside the country. However, the concert did not attract the attention of critics and foreign audiences.
In October 1980, the band released their first album called “Boy”. Their second album “Oktobar” followed in 1981. At that time, critics and fans began to notice the band’s spiritual lyrics. Three of the band members – Bono, Larry and The Edge are devout Christians and are members of a religious group based in Dublin known as “Shalom”.
In 1983, U2 released their third album, War, which included the single “New Year’s Day”, their first international hit single. Several years later, U2 continues to gain worldwide recognition. Currently, U2 is one of the best regarded bands in the music industry and continues to fly the Irish flag proud.
