Learning To Ride A Unicycle, Core Strength And Other Benefits Of Becoming A Unicyclist
During the first 22 years of my career as an electrician, I spent almost every day walking, climbing, stretching, balancing and pulling. I was in excellent physical condition and excelled in anything that required agility and balance. For some reason, at our friends’ weddings, the limbo stick would always come out around midnight. I’m 6’2″ and usually won!
In my early 40s, I stopped being “on the tool” and took on a more supervisory role (desk jockey). I bought a treadmill and stayed slim by using it almost every night. A few months later, my family went on a ski vacation. To my shock and horror, there was no longer that feline certainty in my actions. Physically I was still in great shape, balance and reflexes took a serious dive.
After a bit of googling (and listening to my wife gently tease me about getting older), I realized that my “core strength” isn’t what it used to be. Your “core” is essentially the area of your torso. It involves the muscles of the back and abs. There are a lot of them, and they all have Greek names, but basically these muscles are what help you be agile. My treadmill wasn’t working.
I discussed my depressed situation with my wife’s boss. He is a nurse, competitive cyclist and occasional skier. Surprisingly, his first recommendation was to take up cycling. He explained that the inherent unbalanced situation of riding a unicycle forces the body to constantly and rapidly flex and relax all those core muscles in an effort to keep you on top of the lone wheel. He also said that the only thing that could be better would be log rolling. Unfortunately I don’t have a lake and a 20 inch diameter log so a unicycle would have to do and he loaned me his old one until mine arrived.
The learning process is one that requires some determination. Getting proficient with a unicycle took me a lot longer than when I was a kid figuring out how to ride a two-wheeler. Fortunately, I have more patience now. The average time to become competent enough on a unicycle to ride without endangering yourself or public property is 12 hours.
In another sense, the learning process is very similar to riding a bicycle. After a lot of effort, something just seems to “click” and suddenly you are able to drive. Your body has a “EUREKA!” a moment. Gaining confidence and skills takes more time, but discovering a whole new physical ability as an adult approaches the surreal.
I wholeheartedly recommend a unicycle for both exercise and fun. I truly believe it is one of the “best kept secrets” in health and fitness and I expect it to one day see widespread use as both a core strengthener and cardio machine.
