Improve My English Conversation by Listening, Responding and Asking

Each conversation has three parts. Whether it’s on the phone, over coffee with a friend or at a business meeting with the boss and colleagues; Listening, answering and asking.

I’m listening

Wherever you go, and by this I mean wherever you go to try to learn a language, they will tell you to listen. There are many reasons for this. First of all, listening is such an important aspect of any language that you would be at a disadvantage in life if you didn’t listen. This is what makes language. Language needs listeners. That’s where you come in.

Listening is a skill. It is something that needs a lot of practice. If you speak a language fluently, for example your mother tongue, then the skills you need to work on are different than those of someone listening in their second language. I will talk briefly about listening in another language.

If you are just starting out or struggling to learn your second language, there is something you can do to drastically improve your knowledge. It’s not book learning. And it’s not learning how to spell it. IT IS LISTENING!

Just listening to a new language can train our brains to the sounds, speech patterns and pronunciations of your new desired language. Take a moment and think about when you first learned to speak. A baby is not born KNOWING its language. So how does he learn the language he eventually speaks?

You’re right! He’s listening. And at first, all babies do is listen. But what happens to the baby in the end? That’s right! He finally says the word. Chances are, he’ll say something that’s been repeated to him a lot. It takes a long time for a baby to finally understand language.

Usually around 3-5 years old, a child understands simple ways of putting sentences together. And going through the years, he eventually understands the language well around the age of 10-12. Minus, of course, vocabulary.

I’m not saying it will take you that long to learn a new language. You are clearly more sophisticated than a child. I’m just saying that if you listen, you will learn.

Answering

Answering is a very simple skill. But there is one important aspect that you must consider before applying the lessons taught here. And that is LISTEN. You have to listen to know how to respond. If you haven’t listened to what your interviewer has to say, how will you know what follow-up questions to ask.

By answering, you can show your interlocutor that you are interested in what they are talking about. Not just because of how you used your non-verbal listening skills. A reply shows that you are actively involved in this conversation. Remember, just because you’re not talking, doesn’t mean you’re not part of the conversation.

This part of the conversation may seem minor, but it is very important to keep the activity going two-way. Because if you just nod and smile, the other person might think you’re a robot. Therefore, you must use this small but important aspect in your conversations.

Responding to what someone has said can be very easy. Especially if you’d rather they keep talking or if you’re genuinely interested in what they’re saying. You can simply ask what they meant when they talked about a certain point in their story.

I ask

Asking is part of the answering process. But it is also a key role. Maybe the key is active listening. This part of the conversation is a key role as it provides you with the knowledge and understanding of the conversation.

When you are actively engaged in a conversation, you should get something out of it. Your goals should be to: learn from the person you’re talking to and make friends or partners for the future.

Asking questions will also take the conversation where you want it to go. If your interlocutor is talking about something that offends you (and it can happen), be polite, wait for them to finish their thought and ask a question that diverts the conversation from the previous topic.

Remember now that you have them talking about something they are interested in, they will know if you listen to what they are saying.

If you want to continue your studies to university or college level in an English-speaking country, then you will need to continue your studies online. While you are learning English online, you will receive the direction you need for all the classes you will attend.
