Good Food, Good Health – Healthy Liver Function From Good Childhood Nutrition

As a nation I believe we now realize the responsibility we have towards nutrition and our children. There are many more stories about the increase in obesity overall across all ages, but worryingly it has increased sharply in children over the past decade.

As our children’s waistlines increase, we greatly increase their risk of future disease and ill health in adulthood, so much so that health officials have said that if the trend continues as it is, the next generation is more likely to die before their parents!

So, as parents we need to develop a sensible healthy eating plan of good food for our children, regularly introducing new fresh foods and making meals and meals fun.

Fast food should really be reduced to an unusual delicacy, and chips, biscuits and carbonated drinks should also be kept to a minimum, because these are the foods that cause weight gain. A child’s liver function soon slows down due to excessive fat accumulation, which can lead to liver damage.

If the liver is damaged by fatty degeneration – saturated fat – cholesterol regulation is impaired, it does not produce enough ‘good’ HDL and allows levels of ‘bad’ LDL to rise, leaving you at greater risk of heart attacks and strokes later in life.

We always say ‘you are what you eat’ and that everyone should strive for a varied diet of good food for good health, along with moderate exercise and drinking plenty of fluids.

By doing this, we give our body the best help we can to achieve the full range of nutrients and vitamins it needs to function optimally.

Obviously, other factors that can greatly affect our health and well-being must be included, including lack of sleep, environment, geographic location, pollutants, genetic conditions, etc.

Eating well is critical for all of us at all ages, but studies have shown that during childhood, and especially in the younger years, eating well can really make a difference.

A study conducted at the University of Bristol found that women with longer legs tend to have healthier livers, researchers say, and suggests that women with shorter legs are more susceptible to liver damage.

The key they say seems to be childhood nutrition. A healthy diet is beneficial in the early stages of life, allowing the body to grow consistently and evenly and with this good function, liver growth is also encouraged.

Recently, there have also been several studies showing that the health of babies can be significantly improved if pregnant mothers eat a good and varied diet, and exclude smoking and alcohol.

They found that taller people generally have larger livers and as a body detoxifier, it allows the body to remove more harmful substances from the blood.

A build-up of ‘toxins’ in the liver can cause it to become ‘sluggish’ and this can be detrimental to the body’s ability to maintain good health and well-being.

A healthy liver is vital to good health, and eating nutritious foods helps to form new liver cells and can even repair some damaged cells.

Therefore, the work of the liver is significantly improved or influenced by the diet we eat.

It’s really easy to add beneficial detoxifying foods to your diet just by eating lots of fresh fruits and vegetables; if you get five a day then you’re on the right track. Include protein from lean meats, fish twice a week, whole grains and nuts – preferably unsalted.

The way we cook food is also important – it is overcooked and a lot of goodness is lost, so slow-boiled, steamed, fried and grilled are the best ways to keep vitamins and nutrients at their maximum in food.

We believe that we can achieve our daily required amounts of vitamins and nutrients through a healthy, varied diet, but during or after illness when a lack of appetite often occurs, taking a supplement can help, but as always, you should first seek medical advice.

So let our motto ‘good food for good health’ be yours, and with a good varied diet of healthy food you can only help in achieving good health and well-being for yourself and your children.
