Tips On Changing Your Husband’s Bad Behavior And Encouraging Him To Be a Better Husband

I often hear from women who are on the receiving end of their husband’s behavior. Many of them are in a situation where they don’t want or can’t get a divorce, so they know that they will have no relationship with that person. But that doesn’t mean they always enjoy how he acts or treats them. Many find that over time their tolerance for their husband’s annoying, nasty or completely rude behavior and attitude towards them begins to decrease and they want to take action.

I recently heard from a woman who said in part, “my husband is not a bad guy, but sometimes he is a bad husband. When we met, he was loving and open. Today it is neither. He is sarcastic. He knows how to be mean. And very often he is lazy. His attitude is that he works hard all day and when he comes home he doesn’t have to lift a finger. In the meantime, I juggle work, parents, this house, and our children. But he would never think to do anything to ease my burden and when I’m reluctant to have sex with him because I’m just tired and frustrated he makes comments that show he thinks most of this is my fault and that I’m letting him down in some way. loves or compliments. I could fall over if you gave me a compliment. If you had told me 10 years ago that the man I loved would turn into one of those bad husbands from sitcoms, I would never have believed you. But that’s almost exactly what I have. I don’t want to leave him or get a divorce. I love him and we have children. But I don’t know how much longer I can take his behavior. However, when I call him, he acts like I’m an overly emotional woman, shrugs my shoulders or makes a joke. How do I get him to change?”

To begin with, I asked this woman how she had tried to get him to change his behavior in the past. She said that most of the time she would call him and either tell him she didn’t appreciate it or point it out and then all back off together, hoping he would “get the hint.” This obviously did not work because in response the husband would either increase his negative behavior or paint the woman as overly critical or overly emotional. So, I felt that the first step would be a change in tactics, which I will discuss below.

Continue to call him out on his bad behavior, but do it in a completely different way: I would never suggest that you allow your husband to continue his bad behavior without any comment or reaction. But I have to tell you what I often hear from husbands on the other side of the equation. If you talked to them, what you would hear is that the woman always paints them as the “bad guy” and seems to take great pleasure in constantly pointing out their many faults.

I often hear comments like, “My wife acts like I’m an evil ogre or something. I can’t do anything right in her eyes and she just seems to like to tell me as much as she can. There’s no winning with her. When I try to I’ll be better, she won’t even notice, so what’s the point?”

And that’s why you’ll often get better results if you try to find a way to paint your husband as good, not bad. Because if you do, you will get a much more positive response and cooperation from him. He will feel appreciated and you will get what you want. It really is a win/win. But if you continue to deal with it with more criticism and disappointment, you’re likely to experience more bad behavior and even resentment that can motivate your husband to want to keep pushing your buttons.

I’m certainly not suggesting that you ignore his behavior or even try to get the best of him. What I’m suggesting is that you approach this in a completely different way and hope you get a different (and better) result.

Changing his behavior by making him want better: In my experience, the whole key is to give your husband a positive payoff to strive for. If you can compliment (and reward) him when he exhibits the behavior you want, then he will be much more likely to do it again without complaint. One of the reasons for this is that it feels validated. You see him as the good guy you both know he really is, deep down. Men like to play the role of hero. So let him play the hero, not the bad guy. This will make them much more enthusiastic.

My suggestion would be this. The next time the wife comes home and the husband starts his negative behavior, the wife might say something like, “I see you’ve probably had as exhausting a day as I have. Why don’t we order and take turns rubbing each other’s backs? We’ll both feel better and everything else can wait.” Normally, a wife would throw herself into her husband and, anticipating a fight, he would respond in kind.

But in this way both people get relief and fight is avoided. Another strategy to use is to find your husband doing something right and react even more strongly than you do when he does something wrong. Not only should you praise him to his face, but you should also praise him to whoever is listening in front of him. He will feel pride instead of frustration and will look for ways to repeat the same positive behaviors. It doesn’t hurt to praise him with your physical affection when he behaves in the way you hoped. This is great motivation for him to keep going, and in the meantime, you both bond with each other and make it more likely that you both want to be kind and supportive of the other.

Basically, you give him a chance and encourage him to do things right, instead of waiting for him to do something wrong and then pouncing when he does.
