Have You Ever Kissed an Ashtray? (Pucker-Up!)
Old Glory gives everyone the freedom to express their opinion, and I have mine about smoking and smokers, which is:
SMOKER: A dragon-like figure, such as a “puff” magic dragon, which is represented as a reptilian body and breathes and emits smoke and fire!
STUPID: characterized by a lack of intelligence.
FOOL: one who lacks judgment or understanding.
DUMB: strikingly unintelligent.
DRAGON: something very scary or dangerous.
I HAVE ZERO TOLERANCE FOR SMOKING AND SMOKERS!
Every time I see a smoker, it reminds me of a dragon, with smoke billowing out of his mouth, nose, ears and probably where the sun don’t shine! Every time my ex-wife and I invited a few “dragons” (who smoked) over for dinner, the place looked like it was on fire and smoke was coming out of all the windows! I was always worried about the smoke alarms going off!
With the cloud of smoke in the house, visibility was about 6 inches (or less) and I was worried someone was going to trip over the coffee table or crash head first into the trash can and hurt themselves! While in the Air Force, I helped put out a house on fire one night, and I got a sense of how powerful the hose that fireman was using! That night we entered that house and destroyed everything with water pressure! So, when a handful of “dragons” came and with all the smoke in the house, I always worried that the neighbor wouldn’t call the fire department, and with those powerful hoses, the fire department wouldn’t destroy the house!

I don’t want smokers around me! With that attitude and the number of smokers around, it pretty much leaves me in the woods alone, doesn’t it? I know all about smoking because I smoked for five years and quit back in 1970 which was one of the best things I ever did for my family too!
However, smoking is not only dangerous in terms of health, it is also dangerous for the relationship. I met my ex-wife in the 1970s, when smoking was hip and trendy, and she smoked for the entire 19 years we were together. But at the time it didn’t really matter to me that she smoked, so smoking wasn’t a problem. But as time went on, she started smoking more and it started to affect our relationship. I think the anti-smoking movement started in the early 1990s, and that’s about the time our relationship went downhill, partly because of her smoking!
For 19 years I tolerated smoking, tried to help Wendy quit smoking, and it all fell on deaf ears! She was always afraid she would gain weight if she stopped, but I told her I would help her with that too if she did! (in one ear and out the other). As time went on, he always seemed to have a cigarette in his mouth! After about 17 or 18 years of this, I started to get annoyed, and smoking rose to the top of our priority list.
When I first met her, she was a smoker, smoking a cigarette here and a cigarette there. She was a casual smoker, so I didn’t raise any red flags, etc. at the time. But as the years went by, her smoking got worse and worse, and naturally I worried about her. First thing in the morning…a cigarette! Last thing before bed…a cigarette! And if he wakes up in the middle of the night…another cigarette! Every morning she woke up coughing and choking! I got really upset about this!
The cigarette became her constant companion! I would get so angry, if I walked into the kitchen and while she was preparing food… that damned cigarette was hanging out of her mouth! I walked up to her several times, grabbed that stupid cigarette hanging out of her mouth, put it in the sink and drowned her!
Smoking affected our relationship, and we argued more and more, and as time went by, we didn’t talk anymore. Our two boys were 10 and 12 at the time, and I know that smoking affected their well-being as well. She had the attitude that she was going to get her little “fix” and/or “satisfaction” no matter what! She was selfish! She didn’t want to see another point of view. She wouldn’t even go outside and smoke!
And I was of the opinion that we have a big problem here, and we’re going to have to find a solution to it, or we might not be together for long! If I brought up the issue of smoking, she would just walk away!
When two people argue and argue frequently, the relationship begins to deteriorate and is likely to die. It finally came to that, when we spoke very little to each other! Over the years, she probably wondered why I kissed her very little…who wants to kiss an ashtray? To cut a long story short, we broke up in 1995, and smoking and all the fights that followed were one of the reasons we broke up!
Today (2006) I am single (by choice), and if a woman crosses my path in the future, she will NOT be a smoker! If so…he can only move on! Research has shown that passive smoking kills just as much as smoking itself! So for nineteen years I have no idea what passive smoking has done to me! Nineteen years with a smoker around me is enough!
