Sex in Ancient Greece – Views Towards Sex & Positions, Part 2

In the first part of the article, we covered the background of ancient Greek society and sex.

Here we look at more about how sex and sexual positions were viewed. The Greeks (like many ancient societies) were extremely liberated and sex in ancient times was certainly very different from our view of sex today.

For a man in ancient Greece, since he was not a slave, but a citizen or free man, his choice of sex would be with his wife (doubtful, as you will see below), house slaves, professional prostitutes, or young men.

The ancient Greek, like today, was basically bisexual, with a penchant for pederasty.

The role of a woman

The wives of Greek men were supposed to do only three things. They were supposed to give birth to legitimate children, take care of the home and cook.

They were never allowed to leave the house unsupervised.

According to our knowledge from the past, Greek men would marry them at around 14 to 15 years of age, and sex with them was often done in rear standing positions.

Sex in bed was not unknown, but beds were not like today, and often an older man on top of a young girl, in bed, would be awkward. The young women were completely inexperienced, and were mostly carried away by older and often fed-up husbands.
