Top 10 Online Business Gurus (Some You May Not Have Heard Of)

As an experienced, but self-taught, entrepreneur and internet person, after learning to type in school and nothing else, I turned to books and mentors when I finally decided I had had enough of being poor and unsuccessful!

After reading hundreds of books and websites and subscribing to even more newsletters, there are some people who have consistently delivered value over the last 10-12 years.

Sometimes just one word, phrase, question or comment made a difference, but what a difference. Every step forward was a real step forward, and we all know that the road to success is a series of steps, each building on the last.

I wanted to share with you the top 10 digital marketing “gurus” who have inspired me in my online business journey so far and I tried to tell you about them in chronological order – how I found them (or in the case of Guy Levine, how they found me! )

1. Robert G Allen – I became aware of the potential of making money online around 1998/1999, about five years after I bought my first domain name. I have long been aware of the potential of advertising any real business online, but I was completely blissfully ignorant about selling information products, making money through affiliate marketing, and creating a mailing list to send offers to. I, like many dyed-in-the-wool entrepreneurs before me, was so obsessed with building a real world business, that the potential just passed me by! Fortunately, I soon met Guy Levine and Chris Barrow and accidentally did a few things right… meanwhile, my sister’s husband gave her Robert Allen’s Multiple Streams of Internet Income for Christmas, which I stole, devoured, and led to me to read other great books by Robert G. Allen such as “No Money for the 90’s” now updated for the 2000’s, the brilliant and revolutionary “One Minute Millionaire” as well as other great online books like…

2. Joe Vitale – perhaps best known for his excellent personal development books and being featured in the movie The Secret, Joe Vitale is also a very experienced internet marketer – he’s been around and making money online since the mid to late 90’s (which in internet history is very really experienced). Email marketing is one of the easiest ways to start making money online and in fact it’s still how I make most of my money, whether it’s marketing my products or services to my mailing list, or recommending carefully selected items from foreign to friends and colleagues. Email marketing (simplified) involves driving traffic to a page where someone gives you their name and email in exchange for some kind of gift, thereby building your mailing list. Then you need to stay in touch with people so they get used to hearing you and build a good relationship with your subscribers. Joe explains how to do this very well in his book “E-code” in several chapters and if you want to start somewhere easy I recommend you read it. Then check out Martin Avis from Kickstart Monthly as he’s a master at using a simple text newsletter to make money online!

3. Jaclyn Easton – Her book “Striking It Rich.com” I read around the same time. I was trying to start an internet business, based on connecting unsigned artists in the music industry (where my husband and I worked) with managers who were looking for an artist to read. Jaclyn’s book was about 23 little-known websites that make more than a million dollars a year, and essentially many of the business models were membership sites. This inspired me so much that I ended up pitching my business plan THE VERY SECOND when the dot com bubble burst, at the posh Atlantic Bar & Grill in London, to a crowd of venture capitalists, during a fire alarm. Which fire alarm bell fell and stopped at random, so I was alternately shouting into the void, or completely silent!

4. Thomas Leonard – the founder of the Coaching movement and Coach U, which was my online college and then Coachville. Thomas wrote the first coaching book “The Portable Coach”, which I still highly recommend, and he used email, mailing lists, research and development groups, autoresponders and everything we use today quite well. I’ve been using ShoppingCart recommended by me since 1999 to host my double opt-in email list, manage my product inventory, automatically follow up on leads and customers, deliver digital information products, offer time-limited and % off vouchers, split test headlines and pricing through AdTrackers… Thomas was very inspirational and ahead of his time, however, he died very unexpectedly and tragically, having overcome many of his personal demons, in 2003.

5. Guy Levine – Going to my first coaching convention in Las Vegas to see Thomas in action led me to meet Chris Barrow (my new business coach) and Guy Levine, his friend and internet marketing consultant. The guy blew me away – he was only about 19 – but one of the smartest people I’ve ever met. He knew a lot more than I did about internet marketing and was very generous in sharing his ideas and techniques. Guy has built a successful SEO / AdWords / PR company based in Manchester, had two babies with his wife Martine and bought two helicopters which he flies himself to lectures. And he’s a great speaker! If he wasn’t so funny, you’d have to hate him!

6. Brett McFall – after meeting Guy, Steve Watson, Paul & Philly Fuggle and I were invited to support him when he spoke at the first World Internet Summit held in the UK at Wembley. The co-host there was Alan Forrest Smith who, while not one of my digital marketing gurus on this list, has also been incredibly influential in my life. I decided, while standing in the audience at that first event, that I would speak on stage the following year. And I did, thanks to Alan, I actually spoke for them twice, the only British woman asked to do so. I’ve become great friends with Brett McFall, one of the co-founders of WIS, as it’s now universally known, and he’s a very inspiring guy. He is a very kind and sincere man who has helped me a lot in speaking and promoting my business from the stage in particular. He came to Brighton just before one of our Money Gym events that he was co-hosting and while we were there filming videos we did a very funny video of him getting rained on and he was also a bit taken aback by a seagull which never fails manages to make me smile and remember a great day.

7. Frank Kern – I was listening to one of Brett’s audio interviews around the same time and was particularly taken with a couple of guys who had a simple but dynamic system called “The UnderAchiever Method”. Turns out those guys are Frank Kern and Ed Dale and they invented a neat little system that involves driving traffic to a page where you ask one question “What do you want to know about……X? where X is your chosen niche . The answers are sorted and compiled so you can see what most people want to know and what the most popular 1-word, 2-word, and 3-word phrases are that people have used. Then you’ve gone and created a product (usually an e-book, which maybe written by a ghostwriter, covering the most popular questions) and then you sold it back to your new mailing list. Most people gave the initial product as an incentive to answer the questions, and that also brought in testimonials, so it was all good. Then new traffic sold product along with real testimonials and use of niche language Very clever stuff I believe they sold their mini publishing empire of niche product information sites to a UK publisher for a very to sums of money, in the end.

That was the first time I really understood the value of expert, niche, responsive mailing lists of customers. Both Frank and Ed became incredibly successful in their separate businesses, in Franks case not without a few setbacks! He has been heavily involved in many major IM product launches. Frank’s online style is laconic, casual and very, very convincing. Now Frank has gotten some stick for maybe being too convincing, but I just love his style and watching footage of him live is just hilarious – so rock and roll – I really want to see him live one day. Ed Dale founded the very successful “30 Day Challenge” that guides new internet marketers through a free program (Ed earns from the affiliate products he recommends in that free program).

8. Rich Schefren – around 2006 a new internet marketing guru exploded onto the scene, except he was a true business guru who ventured into the world of internet marketing after selling his last business. After training many big names such as Jim Edwards, Mike Filsaime and many others, he then published his groundbreaking report “The Internet Marketing Manifesto” which was soon followed by the “Missing Chapter” and “The Final Chapter” reports. Rich blew me away by teaching a ton of solid business techniques that I had NEVER come across before, in an easy to understand and digestible way, while capturing the attention and admiration of the ADD troubled internet marketing community. I went on to join his mentoring programs “Business Growth System” and “Driven Profit System” – which are fantastic by the way – and my company started to grow rapidly as a result. Do yourself a favor and download the reports – they’re not just about IM, they’re about entrepreneurship – you won’t regret it.

9. Gary Vaynerchuk – so how about gary? I love him. I first heard him on an audio interview that Rich Schefren did for his mentor students, and Gary was just beginning his rise to World Wine Domination! Hey, that’s a great phrase! You can find Gary on WineLibrary.tv and all over YouTube and Ustream – he is a MASTER of online videos. Enthusiastic, passionate, outspoken, unconventional, Gary believes in HARD WORK, that you can simply “Crush It!” in the title of his first book, if you care about what you do, care about your readers, listeners, subscribers and customers and show that you care at all times. According to Gary, smaller companies have NEVER had a better chance of dominating their competition.

10. Yaro Starak – I can’t remember where I first came across Yaro and his Entrepreneurs Journey blog, but I knew right away that he was the real deal. I later went back and read almost all of his blog posts from day one because I was fascinated by how he grew from a kid selling dissertation editing services to students to one of the most respected bloggers in the world. He has an interesting background and is very open about it, as well as his various challenges – both at work and personally – and I like that about him. It’s not just about how to get traffic, but how to be a better entrepreneur. Yaro has a bunch of great free reports – one is called the Blog Profits Blueprint and it’s very strong on the membership sites too, both of which you should really read if you want to learn more about blogging for your business. He also recommends great people, like Gideon Shalwick who has the gentlest, most pleasant video presence I’ve come across in a while. I highly recommend both Yaro and Gideon.

Here they are – the 10 best gurus for business and internet marketing in the last 12 years or so. For me anyway. I hope you enjoyed the article and check out some of the reports and books, then PUT THEM INTO ACTION!
