Good Manners Are a Must!
One of the most important qualities a child should have is good behavior. Well-behaved children are more successful and self-confident. Good manners help them develop positive family and business relationships as they grow up. They are more likeable and have more friends. Instilling good manners in your child must start very early, from the moment the child begins to understand. Growing up, one rule of thumb was: Never call an adult by their first name. Dr/Mr/Mrs/Miss and surname or simply “Uncle” or “Aunt” were the prevalent words where I come from, that’s one of the reasons why I had a lot of uncles and aunts! If a child called an adult by name, it was not polite and was not considered respectful.
The use of magic words was always at the top of the list of manners – Please and Thank you. Did you think there were only two magic words? Here are two more – Sorry and Excuse me. I wish I could replace all the “Yes!” and “No!” with “Yes please!” and “No thanks!” It will be very pleasant to hear “Sorry, sorry!” instead of “Huh!” There are other ways like don’t interrupt two adults if they are in a conversation. If you are bored listening to them, control yourself, don’t say it. Wait your turn. Think twice before you say anything, which includes not using foul language, never make inappropriate comments or call others names. If you want something, ask for permission. If a friend greets you, greet them. Share with others. Help others. Respect everyone. To be kind.
Handshakes are considered good manners, and good manners are essential to success in the business world. In the Middle Ages, shaking hands originated in Europe. People shook hands to prove that they were not hiding any weapons. It has evolved over the years. So have manners. They have also evolved over generations, but seem to be eroding among children. Passing these manners on to the next generation is becoming increasingly difficult. I think our parents may have felt the same way. All good manners begin at home. Children like to imitate adults, so we must be good role models. Never ignore the unpleasant behavior of children, you should always talk about it with them and monitor the problem privately. Always praise your child for showing good manners. Teachers also play an important role. For younger children, child development specialists and teachers can come up with 1 way to emphasize each month. Topics can range from addressing adults, respect, social interaction with friends, using magic words, etc. The advantage of emphasizing one method at a time will help to keep the child from becoming too overwhelmed. It takes time to teach children good manners. So keep emphasizing them and they will turn into a good habit. I came across an activity for older kids (primary school age) where they had the top 20 manners questions asking if they practiced those manners. They had to read and check one of three – often, sometimes or never. The morale of the exercise is good and children are reminded of good manners as part of the exercise.
I have come across some parents who today think that manners are an old fashioned concept. They boast that their child is independent and allow them to misbehave in front of others. Well, good manners will never go out of style. They are one of the tools of a child’s success. Respect and polite behavior are not common among children these days. If your child will have this rare commodity, he will surpass many other children. It’s never too late to start working on good manners with your children.
