Kids Music – The Magic of Music For Kids
What is so good about music? We all know that music can make us want to jump, dance and tap our feet. But did you know that music is linked to math scores, brain development and anxiety relief? During the critical young age of learning when the brain is still developing, the influence of music is at its greatest. But even beyond the younger years, music can still play an important role, providing guidance for pre-teens, anxiety relief for adults, and even therapy for Alzheimer’s patients.
Psychologists and educators are just beginning to discover the many benefits that music provides for our mental health. While we may all be somewhat familiar with the idea that loud and fast music makes us feel different than quiet and slow music, research shows that the predictable ways in which music can affect us go beyond changing our moods. Some research shows that we can predictably change many of our mental states and even heal damaged brains. Another study found that students with attention deficit disorder (ADD) were able to improve their focus, given the results of neurofeedback while listening to music in the background.
There are many genres of music, and for a student who wants to take advantage of the motivational and instructional elements of music, the first step is to appropriately match their age and interest to a particular genre of music. Parents and teachers know that pre-teens won’t be caught listening to the music that held their attention as a toddler. But while there are plenty of genres and songs to choose from for the very young and for adults, there are fewer choices for those in the middle, who might benefit most from music’s educational value.
Educational music for children can be influential in teaching values, instructive in memorizing the alphabet, for example, and motivating in wanting to learn more about a topic. Some teachers play “welcome music” as children enter the classroom, which grabs their attention and makes them want to learn more about the theme of the educational song.
Children are hard-wired to want to learn, and the teaching approaches that work best align with the natural learning process and student interests. Music for children is a powerful way to connect, motivate and teach young students, in a method that is not forced, but in line with their interests and natural desire to learn.
