What Is Child Labour?

Every child under the legal age throughout the world works full-time, mentally or physically to earn for their own survival or to increase the family’s income, which hinders the child’s social development and education is called “child labor”.

Any child under the age of 15 who engages in activities to feed his family or himself is “child labor”. ILO Convention 138 (C. 138) obliges countries to establish a minimum age for employment that must not be lower than the age for completing compulsory education and, in any case, must not be less than 15 years. Developing countries may set the minimum age at 14 years. C-138 provides flexibility to countries to establish a younger minimum age of 12 or 13 for children who would participate in “light work”.

Work that does not interfere with education (light work) is allowed from the age of 12 according to Convention 138 of the International Labor Organization (ILO). Thus, a child engaged in part-time work to learn practical skills associated with social or inherited customs or trades is not child labour. It becomes “child labor” only when a child weaves a carpet in a factory or factory; he earns money to support his family without education, social development. On the other hand, if a child works for 3-4 hours to learn or earn for himself or his parents after school, it would not be considered child labor as the additional education and practical skills the child learns.

Types of child labor – Self-employed and employed by others are two categories of child labor:

o Self-employed – street vendors, rag or waste pickers, street entertainers, child prostitution or pornography (but mostly employed by notorious gangs), begging and other odd jobs. This type of children are mostly street children and rural migrants. Most of these children are orphans, abandoned by their parents, riots or the misery of war. The situation is changing; in poor countries they help parents.

o Employed by others – factory or mine workers, domestic servants, child prostitution or pornography. Carrying out work in someone else’s premises or under someone else’s custody. Such children work with the consent of their parents or are without parents. Some are sold or some are worked to help their parents make ends meet.
