Potty Training – How to Potty Train Your Toddler in Just One Day

As you know, potty training a child can be a time of testing a parent’s patience. It can be a time of anxiety, disappointment, one step forward and two steps back. And sometimes potty training can be a very long and drawn out experience and something that we as moms can dread. Wet and messy underwear, surprises left all over the floor and the thought “will my child ever learn how to use the toilet?”

My daughters are now 16 and almost 12. They were potty trained when they were about 2-1/2 years old. And they are potty trained in just one day! They all laughed at me when I told them this. Moms looked blank at dinner parties and thought I was deranged when I wanted to share my enthusiasm, until weeks later they called me and asked how did I do it?

How my kids are potty trained in just one day, and yours can too!

Well, something like this happened. When Alicia, my oldest, was getting ready to go potty, I didn’t really know what to do except sit her on the potty and hope for the best. Then one day I was shopping with a friend whose kids were teenagers, but she used the system to toilet train her kids in just one day. And she told me, “it really worked!” Well, the next week I asked her out for coffee and sat down and asked her all the specific details of what she did.

To prepare for your one-day toilet training, prepare yourself

* a doll that can cry to itself.

* a very sturdy potty chair with a potty that can be emptied and reinserted into the chair,

* lots of drinks, salty food and sweets,

* underwear that is about 2 sizes larger,

* apron with pockets.

Potty day

On the morning of the training day, make sure no one is at home. Put a note on the door explaining that you want No Interruption and turn on the answering machine and turn off the cell phone. By the end of the day, you’ll be giving your child your undivided attention and following the instructions of the toilet training plan. First, teach your child to potty train the crying doll. This will give her or him an idea of why and how to go to the bathroom. She should learn how to take the doll to the potty in time, take off her pants, wait for the doll to urinate, pull up her pants, then have the doll empty the potty (with fake urine) into the toilet, then put the potty back into the potty. Also, have your child praise the doll enthusiastically and reward when the doll goes potty and poops.

Then once your child has mastered potty training the doll, it’s time for you to potty train your child using the same steps for yourself. Here, give her plenty to drink so she has plenty of opportunities to go to the toilet. teach her step by step, how to easily pull up and down her pants (it really helps that they are two sizes up), how to sit on the toilet (potty) and relax until she urinates or has a bowel movement. How to wipe herself, pull up her panties and empty the pot into the toilet, then put her back in the potty chair.

And don’t forget to teach your child to wash his hands every time.

Awards and praise

Your child should receive rewards while learning and for correct behavior. Then teach your child what to do when he has an accident, how to go to the bathroom when he’s playing, and how to get to the bathroom when he’s playing outside. Rewards and praise can be given for dry pants, especially after she gets used to going to the toilet on her own.

He doesn’t have to wear diapers to bed that night. Leave a night light on for her and a potty chair can be placed near her bed. The next day we celebrate with her and give her a Certificate of Achievement for toilet training. Yes, it can happen and yes, your child can be toilet trained in just one day!

I am convinced that you can do this too, if you know how…

Step by step

1. Prepare your child by reading him/her books such as “I Want My Potty” by Tony Ross and “Max’s Potty” by Harriet Ziefert or “All By Myself” by Dr. Bill Gillham. Let your child watch his/her family members go to the toilet so they can see what’s going on and how to do it.

2. Prepare the things you will need, such as big panties, wipes, a self-wetting doll and a sturdy potty or make your home toilet suitable with an inset seat and steps or a box for your child to stand on.

3. Allow one day without interruption to train your child to potty train the doll and then teach him the steps to go to the toilet.

4. Enthusiastically praise your child whenever he does something and clap and cheer when he actually urinates or defecates in the toilet and/or potty.

5. At the end of the day when your child is successfully toilet trained or the next day, make a celebration and give the child a Certificate of Success
