Child Health – What Can We Do?
There is great concern about the health of children in America right now. This is not a new phenomenon – Calvin Coolidge started the annual ‘Children’s Health Day’ in 1928. It is held on the first Monday in October every year. Health professionals from across America meet to discuss children’s nutrition, fitness, obesity and health education.
Most health professionals agree that the key to healthy choices is education from an early age before bad habits are formed. Parents must protect and develop the health of their children from the very beginning.
Reportedly, one in six children in America is obese and this can lead to health problems such as asthma, diabetes and heart disease.
What can we do?
The problem today is that children have access to computers, electronic games and of course television. It’s obvious that these are all sedentary parties and the kids aren’t getting enough exercise.
Once upon a time, children played in the street with their friends who ran here, there and everywhere – returning home only when they were hungry or when it got dark. Today’s safety-conscious parents are reluctant to let their children alone – it’s much easier and safer to let them sit in front of the TV or computer. In addition, due to time constraints and work commitments, children are usually driven everywhere by their parents.
One solution to this problem is to enroll your child in one of the many educational programs available for children. Many of these schemes combine play with exercise and learning and can greatly improve your child’s social and behavioral skills.
A child’s diet is important.
Another big problem in children’s health care is nutrition.
First of all, it is important to lead by example – obese parents tend to have overweight children. Serve a balanced diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables and watch the portion size – a seven or eight year old doesn’t need an adult portion. Cut down on snacks and sodas – or make sure the snacks are healthy. Children easily get used to peeled baby carrots (very crunchy and sweet), apple and banana slices or seedless grapes.
If you take your child to one of the great educational programs for kids, make sure their lunch box is full of healthy foods.
You can offer peeled and sliced raw vegetables with yogurt sauce, some whole grain bread, your favorite fruit, some cold chicken, a mixed salad with corn and grated carrot – and for a drink, water or semi-skimmed milk. Whatever you do, leave out the cookies, chips, chocolate and sodas!
