3 Easy Ideas For Christmas Cookie Decorating With Kids
One of the happiest times I have with my nephews is in my kitchen decorating cookies to give them as Christmas presents. They had more fun than I did, and the devotees enjoyed the homemade treats. Let me show you how to decorate Christmas cookies with your kids.
The easier the process is for the children, the better. You need three things to get started: a simple sugar cookie recipe, simple royal decorations, and a few tubes of ready-made royal icing in different colors so that each child can share the royal icing.
Here’s my favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe to get you started.
Chocolate sugar cookies
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 cup of sugar
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa, sifted (recipe tested with regular cocoa)
1 large egg
1-1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
3 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 tbsp. chocolate syrup
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar on medium speed for two minutes. Scrape down the sides of the bowl.
Add egg, vanilla and chocolate syrup. Blend well.
In a medium bowl, mix the flour, cocoa and salt.
Add to the butter mixture a little at a time until completely combined. Scrape down the sides of the bowl.
Leave the dough in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before use.
Recipe makes 2 dozen cookies depending on what size cookie cutter is used.
Pre-Made Royal Frosting Decorations:Several companies have ready-made royal icing decorations that you can peel off the paper and pipe onto baked sugar cookies. During the holidays, companies offer packages of Santa and his reindeer, snowmen, candies, snowflakes and other designs. I suggest peeling all the royal icing off the paper, carefully removing the excess paper with a sharp knife, then placing all the royal icing decorations in a small bowl.
3 simple ideas for decorating Christmas cookies with children
1. Independent decorating:Place a plastic sheet on the floor under the table. Set the children’s decorating table with a plastic tablecloth and place the baked sugar cookies on a tray in the center. Place the finished royal icing decorations in the bowl near the cookie pan. Cut a medium-sized hole in one of the colored royal icing tubes so the kids can squeeze the royal icing onto their sugar cookies, put the top back on and place them on the other side of the cookie pan. Place plastic coasters in front of each child, then place a plastic plate, tray, or sheet of wax paper on the table near them so they can place their finished decorated sugar cookies. Also put plastic knives at each place so the kids can spread the royal icing over their cookies and paper towels cut into medium squares so they can wash their hands while they decorate. You can also put different types of spray bottles for them to use as well. Kids love splashing.
2. Supervised decoration: This idea can be a duplicate of the first idea, except you are there to supervise and help the kids decorate. If you know how to use fondant, you can use fondant to cover sugar cookies and then help them punch out fondant flowers and other fondant shapes to decorate their cookies.
3. Group decorating:This idea replicates the first idea, but on a larger scale where a group of children are involved in decorating. Different types of sugar cookies can be baked and then given out to the children to decorate and take home a variety of sugar cookies. Adults can buy decorating supplies and put them in disposable bowls and place them on the decorating table for all the kids to use. A few adults will need to be on hand to restock and secure boxes for the kids to take home their cookies.
Each of these ideas can be successfully implemented as long as you remember that kids have fun decorating cookies and creating their own edible masterpiece. And, when you’re done, be sure to take pictures of the kids with the cookies. This could turn into an annual event.
