Craft Project – How To Dress Up Plain Holiday Gift Bags

If you’re crafty and thrifty, I think you’ll appreciate this easy craft project to make and decorate your own holiday gift bags.

I went out to the local discount dollar store and bought 5 gift bags for $1.00 and brought them home. After looking at them, I knew they would make a great craft project with my 11 and 13 year old nieces.

Old age: Since ironing is included, I recommend ages 11 and up with adult supervision.

Supplies Needed:

Plain paper gift bags (with handles)

White, green, red, orange, black and brown scraps of fabric

Printed holiday fabric design (we used a duck)

Heat ‘N Bond hot melt glue for ironing

2 Wiggle Eyes

White craft glue

Iron and ironing board

Scissors

Markers (optional)

Snowman bag: You can get a pattern from a children’s coloring book or freehand your own snowman shape along with a cylinder shape. Cut your snowman out of white cotton fabric, a triangle shape out of orange fabric (the nose) and a hat shape out of black cotton fabric. For the scarf, we cut a strip 1/4 inch wide by 8 inches long from the red patterned fabric. Following the directions on your Heat ‘N Bond package, iron the fusible tape to the wrong side of your fabric pieces. Then first put the white snowman piece down and iron it onto your gift bag. Then you will iron his hat and scarf to his body in the appropriate places. Finish by centering an orange triangle on his face to represent his nose. Allow the pieces to cool for 5 minutes. Using craft glue, glue 2 small moving eyes above his nose. If you want, use a white marker and draw snowflakes or snow globes by hand.

Easy Tree Bag: Cut a triangle of green patterned fabric that is approximately 4″ tall and 2 1/4″ wide. From the brown fabric, cut the trunk to be 1/4″ wide and 2 1/2″ tall. Iron the fusible tape onto the wrong side of your fabric pieces according to package directions. Iron the tree on your gift bag first, then the tree on top. (only slightly overlapping trunk). Allow to cool for 5 minutes. If you want, you can use markers to draw snowflakes or write a message.

Festive bird bag: We had a piece of holiday fabric with birds stamped on it and cut out. Each one is 4″ wide and 2 3/4″ tall. You can use any printed holiday fabric you like. Some great choices would be: Christmas trees, snowmen, holly, pine wreaths, birds, packages, etc. Whatever you have. You can cut out the shapes or design your own shapes. You’ll follow the directions on your Heat ‘N Bond package to attach the ribbon to the backs, then iron your shapes onto the gift bags.

The bags we made use a lot of my fabric scraps and are simple in design. However, you can really dress them up with other materials such as ribbons, lace, buttons and so on.
