50 Ideas to Organize Your Home

“Organize” is a familiar word heard on many of today’s popular decorating shows. Every family has their own struggles with some kind of clutter, whether it’s piles of paper or a cluttered and cramped bathroom. In fact, the National Association of Professional Organizers reports that we never use 80% of what we keep, we wear 20% of the clothes we own, while the other 80% hang around just in case, and 25% of adults say they pay their bills late because they’ve lost them.

If you have piles of paper, wasted mornings, or lost car keys, use the following ideas to help organize your family and home.

Evenings/mornings:

1. If you’re in a rush in the morning, pack your lunches, lay out your clothes, and put everything you need for the next day in a designated place the night before. Have the children pack their homework and books into their backpacks to be ready for the next day.

2. Put your purse, briefcase and keys in a designated place every day so you always know where they are.

3. The night before, decide what’s on the menu for breakfast the next morning. If the family will have cereal, put out cereal boxes, bowls and spoons.

4. Make a to-do list for the next day and organize it according to which task needs to be done first.

5. Fill up your gas tank the day before so you don’t have to worry about getting gas if you’re running late the next morning.

bathrooms:

6. To organize the clutter on your work surface, buy a plastic tub with a handle on top. Place all your accessories, such as hairspray and lotion, in the tub and place under the counter. Take the tub out when you’re ready to use it, then put it back under the counter when you’re done.

7. To organize your shower, buy a shower stand to hold soaps and shampoos. There are numerous styles available at many discount and fine department stores.

8. To help keep your shower door clean, buy a water cleaner (like you use on windows) and put it in the shower. When you’re done showering, just wipe the door with a squeegee and you’ll have a clean and dry shower door. Many of the squeegees come complete with a handle, which is convenient for hanging in the shower with a rubber cup.

9. Place a real magnet in your cabinet for tweezers, nail clippers and scissors.

10. Store reading material in a decorative magazine rack. As you add new magazines, discard the old ones to keep the magazine rack from overflowing.

11. Throw away things in your bathroom that are old or no longer in use, such as makeup, lotions, prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, old razors, sunscreens, and perfumes.

12. If you don’t have room in the bathroom towel cabinet, roll them up and display them in a decorative basket next to the shower or tub.

13. Place hooks on the back of your bathroom door or wall space for towels and robes.

14. Use drawer organizers for makeup, jewelry, ponytail holders, and other loose items.

15. Place a shelf above the toilet to store extra towels, washcloths and other accessories.

16. Put a clock in every bathroom so everyone can be on time.

Closet:

17. Put baskets in your laundry and dry cleaning closet.

18. Sort through your clothes and anything you no longer wear, store and donate to a local charity. This includes clothes that are out of style, that no longer fit, or that you haven’t worn in a year. Also, get rid of those worn and/or uncomfortable shoes you no longer wear.

19. Separate your clothes by season. If you have a tall closet with several rows of rods, put the current season clothes on the lowest level and move the off-season clothes to the highest rods.

20. Categorize your clothes by purpose, such as work, casual, and formal.

21. Collect all unused wire hangers and take them to the dry cleaners for recycling.

22. Hang the scarves on a hanger or scarf rack. Also, hang belts and ties on hangers or shelves.

23. Use a shoe rack to keep your shoes organized and get rid of the shoe boxes cluttering the floor.

24. Place hooks on the closet wall to hang hats and purses.

25. Keep the clothes you want to save in a vacuumed plastic bag. These bags pack up for storage under the bed or in the closet. Remember to only save clothes that you think will be worn!

kitchen:

26. Organize your cupboards into several categories such as plates, glasses, Tupperware, baby plates and sippy cups. Place plates on one shelf, glasses on another shelf, etc. This way, when you empty the dishwasher, you or other family members will always know where everything goes.

27. Group your groceries together in the pantry for easy access and to help you recognize when supplies are running low. For example, group your canned goods, grains, pasta, etc.

28. Put all packages (sauce, jelly, sauces) in a basket and place on the shelf.

29. Buy the spice rack that best fits your cabinet. Arrange the spices in alphabetical order and place frequently used spices at the front of the rack and all others towards the back of the rack.

30. For all those plastic containers and Tupperware items, set aside one cabinet or drawer for those items and try to buy stackable containers to maximize your space.

31. Save space on your desktop for items you use every day. Only display the cookbooks you actually use, and if possible, store your canister set in the pantry instead of on the counter.

32. If you have a collection of clipped recipes filling up drawers and counter space, buy a three-ring binder in a color that matches your decor, a box of plastic protectors (to protect your recipes), paper, and a set of tabbed dividers. Glue each recipe onto a piece of paper (use the front and back of each piece of paper), then place in the sheet protector. Categorize recipes (breakfast, dessert, etc.), label cards, and place recipes in a binder. Extra tip, if you buy a binder that has pockets, store the cut recipes you want to try in the pockets before adding them to your collection.

33. Do you have piles of plastic bags from the grocery store? Put about 10 bags in 1 bag and throw away the rest. You can always get more the next time you go to the store.

34. Get into the habit of cleaning out the fridge every time you bring groceries home. Discard any food that is no longer edible or your family will not eat.

kids room:

35. In the boy’s room, put a basketball hoop over the laundry basket to soak dirty clothes.

36. Put up a double divider in your child’s room so they can sort light clothes from dark ones while taking them off.

37. Hang a clothesline in your child’s room and give your child a clothespin of his or her favorite piece of art.

38. Hang a fish net from the ceiling to store stuffed animals, dolls or action figures.

39. Add a bookshelf and help your child organize their books.

40. Buy the kids their own alarm clocks and teach them how to get up on time.

Misc.

41. Make sure everything in your house has a home. Teach all family members to keep an eye on their messes. For example, if you take it out, put it back; if you open it, close it; if you drop it, pick it up; if you make a mess, clean it up; and so on.

42. Place trash cans in each room and place a few unused trash bags at the bottom of each. This will eliminate countless trips to pick up new garbage bags and give everyone in the family a place to dispose of waste.

43. Place a decorative basket on the coffee table to hold the remote controls inside.

44. Use a plastic crate (instead of shelf space) to store cleaning supplies and move them from room to room.

45. Keep toy baskets or tubs in every room for quick pick up and play.

46. For children’s outdoor toys, buy a weatherproof bench storage box and store the toys inside. Also, collect all the outdoor balls and put them in a large mesh drawstring bag and store them in the garage.

47. Every night before bed, have all family members clean up the mess for 15 minutes. Make a game out of it and see who can pick up the most things in the shortest amount of time.

48. Create a family message center on the fridge or other prominent place and use it for shopping lists, reminders, calendars and phone messages.

49. Create a master grocery list on your computer from a spreadsheet or Word document. Categorize foods into sections such as frozen, dairy, and so on. In each category, list the most common items you buy. Organize your grocery list according to how the isles of your favorite grocery store are laid out. Print copies and keep one copy on hand for the current week. When you find yourself running out of produce or preparing your grocery list for the week, simply mark off all the items you need. Keep the document up to date by adding new items and/or deleting items you no longer buy. Also, make room on the document for Misc. items where your family members can write down what they need that aren’t on your list.

50. Create a box on your desk for papers (bills, permission slips, etc.) that need your attention.

The goal of the organization is not to make your home pristine, but to make your life more peaceful and functional. Work with the ideas above and you’ll end up with less clutter, a streamlined home, more quality time for yourself and your family, and improved productivity.
