Writing As Therapy
‘Paula’, is a novel by Isobel Allende about her daughter, a memoir written while her offspring lay in a coma. Hearing of Paula’s illness, Allende’s literary agent handed Isobel a sheaf of papers telling her to relieve herself of her anxiety so she wouldn’t die of it.
Allende writes to his 28-year-old daughter (who never recovered): “Writing is a long process of introspection; it is a journey into the darkest caves of consciousness, a long, slow meditation. I write feeling my way in silence, and along the way I discover particles of truth, small crystals that fit in the palm of one hand and justify my passage through this world… I immerse myself in these pages in an irrational attempt to overcome my terror. I think that perhaps if I give form to this devastation I shall be able to help you and myself, and that meticulous writing may be our salvation.’
As she faces her daughter’s mortality, she considers the rites of birth and how the process compares to creating a book: “Children, like books, are journeys into one’s inner self, during which body, mind, and soul change. and turn towards the very center of existence.’
A new book or play (a new story) is like a birth, a new beginning. It can be the writer’s search for answers, and that search can enrich both the writer and the reader. Reading, like writing, is therapy. For Allende, the very process of recording her thoughts through the written word helps her mind, body and spirit. ‘My writing is magical, an hour of sorcery… My only salvation when everything around me threatens to collapse’.
Millions keep diaries and write down their torment, their pain, their distress. Popular fictional characters such as Adrian Mole and Bridget Jones take a comical view of the eternal wrath that falls on a teenager or a woman herself who is looking for Mr. Right. I kept a journal from about the age of 16 to 23. Not too long ago I dug the 18-year-old’s out of the bottom of a battered old box in my garage. I was amazed at the amount of pain that was recorded there. I’m sure writing helped me process it.
Writing is good therapy, it allows you to express yourself. It can help with healing. Sometimes it is the only therapy available. It can be a miracle tool. Use it.
