Passion, Your Inner Wolf and Freedom

I often overeat and exercise too much. I used food to comfort me and then used exercise as punishment for using food. It was a crazy cycle that almost destroyed me. Seriously, bust.

I thought I had to go on a diet to lose the extra pounds. Turns out I was very wrong. The diet only made my problem worse.

I was dying inside.

There are many words for it – normal, conventional, typical, boring, mediocrity, bourgeois, ordinary, orthodox, general, hum… you get the idea.

Go back and read them and notice what happens in your body.

Not good, is it? It is difficult for me, almost sickening. It makes me want to eat.

There’s a reason for that, and there’s no better explanation than this brilliant twitter quote from a man I’ve never met, but I’m sure I’d like to, Jim Mitchem. He said, “Passion is the wolf in your chest clawing its way out. And if you think that sounds painful, try to deny it.”

That feeling is your wolf. You can’t eat enough to appease her.

I’m convinced that one of the reasons people are overweight and/or depressed is because they deny their passions in an attempt to stay “normal”. Their inner wolf is dying to come out. (By the way, diets don’t teach passion, which is one of the many reasons they don’t work for long-term weight loss.)

I just got off a cruise ship last weekend with 1000 wild, inspiring and passionate entrepreneurs, scientists, innovators, artists and thought leaders. It was so much fun watching business mentors I admired through their books and lectures act like college frat boys on the dance floor. However, what every person on that ship had in common was our desire to step away from mediocrity and normality and fully engage in our lives and live our passion. I don’t think any of us strive for normal. If so, they would probably jump overboard. (Actually, five of them are, but for reasons far beyond trying to be normal. In this case, quite the opposite, but that’s another blog post.)

(Note: it was my first cruise, and I’ve always heard how much food they serve on these ships, and they weren’t lying. Food 24-7 – pizza, pasta, cakes, cookies, ice cream, etc. However, I ate even less than is normal. I didn’t even think about food until I got that grumbling in my stomach. Why? Because passion got my attention.)

However, I understand the desire to try to fit into a box. I was the girl who tried to settle down, built a big house, drove a nice car and worked 12 hour shifts to pay for it all.

I failed.

I was the least active member of the PTO. I didn’t drink alcohol around my family who think it’s a one way ticket to hell. I was a domestic disaster (and still am) except for cooking. I tried to pretend that hip hop wasn’t my thing and that I preferred Chopin (don’t get me wrong, I love Chopin, but most days you’ll find me playing Jay-Z or Snoop.) I even tried for 13 years to be nurse, but it definitely woke up my inner she-wolf. clawing and painful!

Failure after failure. Sloooooowwwwlllllyyyy dying.

When I stopped following all the rules and started living with my soul, magical things started to happen. I developed my own unique relationship with my daughter where we hung out in the living room instead of going to book clubs. We travel instead of throwing big birthday parties. I hired a housekeeper and bless those who think they have to do it themselves. I stopped feeling guilty about traveling so much and started celebrating my inner bohemian. I gave up PTO and filled that time by writing about things like “French Kissing Life” and “Ruling My World”. Opportunities came, and I celebrated by drinking wine unapologetically.

Passion became my inner guide, not rules.

Success cannot be created without passion, and passion cannot be created without some wildness. It is raw energy that does not exist in a vacuum, but in things that allow it to be fully expressed, allow it to ignite.

When you start following your passion, you’ll find yourself breaking the rules you once followed. People will start dropping out of your tribe. You will find yourself in the strangest situations. Slowly (or not), your world will begin to change, but what’s on the other side is freedom. Delicious, delicious freedom.

Tell the world of freedom and notice what happens in your body.

Aaahhhh… like cashmere, right?

However, what stands between here and Kashmir is fear. If you’ve lived in the majority, you’ll be embarking on new territory, and often new translates into fear. No worries. You will survive. Keep walking towards it, not away. Plus, you have a bad wolf to take care of you!

Now tell me. What rules have you followed that your inner wolf wants to break? What are your passions? If you don’t know, start with things that make you smile. That’s a HUGE clue.
