Human Trafficking Around the World: The Global Reach of Modern-Day Slavery!
As globalization progresses, cooperation among nations has brought comfort to everyone in terms of technology and communication. However, with this growth, carelessness in social matters also increased at a rapid rate. One of the most critical socioeconomic issues of worldwide concern is human trafficking.
Human trafficking nowadays is no longer the same old episode of one country smuggling people from underdeveloped countries to another country stationed in a developed economy. These criminals now have strong roots and agents in almost every country and remain connected through technology and other means.
South American, Asian and African countries are considered fertile ground for these illegal activities where poverty, illiteracy and lack of awareness have destroyed the lives of innocent people. These countries are said to have many “cradles of human trafficking.” Human traffickers consider these regions as safe havens where they know how to exploit innocent human lives.
One’s awareness of human trafficking cannot be complete without understanding the current methods used by these illegal traffickers.
Sex trafficking is the most contagious form of human trafficking. It is a trade in forced prostitution, in which innocent girls are deceived by various forms of fraud and coercion. The Philippines, Mexico and India top the list of countries from which the demand for sex trade is met.
Sun-star.com recently reported a case, on December 6, 2011, four suspected human traffickers were arrested in the Philippines, who allegedly sold three women and two girls to Xiamen, China for commercial sex.
US authorities were seen in action when they conducted an operation near the US-Mexico border on December 24 in which Bullard police arrested 11 people. Bullard Police Sgt. stated that Victor Guzman and Cayetano Torres-Rodriguez were running a human smuggling operation. On the same day, Indian authorities arrested a gang of four in connection with child trafficking; “The arrest of Sukhdev is a big achievement as he is trafficking children to different regions of India,” the police claimed.
The latest recorded arrest was of two human traffickers in Ghana while they were trafficking six Nigerian women. What was supposed to be a steady job at a hair salon has turned into a nightmare for six Nigerian girls who were smuggled from their country to Ghana and forced into prostitution in Prampram in the Greater Accra region. Police rescued the girls aged between 19 and 23 years from Edo, Lagos and Delta states following a tip-off. The girls were allegedly brought to Ghana two weeks ago by Esther Francis (33) and Eunice Ayegidi (48), a Nigerian woman living in Prampram, while Victor Tetteh Koody placed them in his unregistered brothel to be used for prostitution.
The volume of sex trafficking is increasing every day.
When it comes to human trafficking for labor needs, North America, Europe and Australia are the three hottest destinations for human traffickers. They bring in cheap labor from poor countries in South America, Africa and Asia to meet demand.
The conditions these workers live in are pathetic and they are constantly trying to find ways to escape. On December 15, 2010, a drastic tragedy occurred when a boat carrying about 90 asylum seekers, mostly from Iraq and Iran, traveling from Indonesia, sank off the coast of Christmas Island (Australian territory), killing at least 30 people. A criminal investigation is underway under the Human Smuggling Act.
Let’s not forget the efforts of the Paraguayan-Mexican authorities, who worked to expose a network of human traffickers who trafficked local women in Puebla, Mexico. In November alone, 14 women were rescued. The law enforcement agency mentioned that mostly young people who accepted “jobs abroad as models” were chosen by alleged international firms. Labor trafficking, child labor and sex work are conditions of human trafficking. As the world’s dominant economies continue to collapse and the value of their currencies decline, the demand for cheap labor is on the rise.
Trafficking in children
Child trafficking is the most dangerous classification of human trafficking in the world. According to a UNICEF statement, “The global market for child trafficking is over $12 billion a year with over 1.2 million child victims. Asian and African countries are the most vulnerable regions where children between the ages of 5 and 15 are trafficked domestically and internationally as an offering for work and sex.”
India was in the spotlight in this regard when on December 22, 2011, the social services branch of the Mumbai police busted an international human trafficking and prostitution racket by arresting a man who was trying to send six young girls abroad to entertain people on New Year’s Eve.
Even China has been the target of human traffickers, as demonstrated last month by the arrest of 608 suspects and the rescue of 178 children that broke up two separate child-trafficking rings. An investigation into a car accident in the southern Chinese province of Sichuan in May led police to the first ring and a second ring was discovered in August.
Child abuse is the most terrible issue, because young people are always said to be the future of the nation and society. If their lives descend into the hell of human trafficking, we can see what our future holds.
Call to action:
Humans are born with great powers, a wide range of choices and a great ability to distinguish between good and bad things. So, it’s time to show that we can put an end to this global problem of human trafficking. It is time to unite against this global crime as one nation. We come together on one platform to provide solutions for our race. Let’s join together to end this global crime.
