Let’s Throw a Party!

The words ‘let’s have a party’ are enough to make us all smile. After all, everyone likes to have fun, right? Certainly, as a child, the thought of going to someone’s party was exciting, although perhaps filled with some nervous anticipation.

Back in the day, children’s parties were pretty simple affairs. You showed up, played with a package, played musical chairs, ate salmon paste sandwiches, spread jelly and ice cream, then left with a goody bag that contained a balloon, coloring book, plastic toy and some penny chews.

These days, kids’ parties have taken it up a notch or two. They’re big business now, and parents spend weeks agonizing over the right type of entertainment to maintain their beloved child’s status. There is often an underlying concern for their child to fit in, to learn what is expected, to connect with ‘real’ children.

Granted, many parents both work, have had to deal with their own divorce, or have evolved into nuclear families. These factors can make organizing a party at home a bit complicated, and besides, who has the time or inclination to deal with a mess!

Gone are the days of fish fingers and mini-burgers at the local coffee shop. As the level of sophistication increases, you are much more likely to find themed parties at the local football club, ice rink, zoo or farm, with face painting, magicians, tractor rides and baby animals.

Young teenagers can expect themed discos, make-your-own pizza or go-kart competitions with all the travel requirements provided by limousines or luxury buses. They love mocktail mixing classes, make-up and stylish clothes.

Parties for adults have also become more elaborate. Yes, you might come across the occasional barn dance or hoe over meat and potato pie, but the invitation is often accompanied by costume requirements, so a fringed jacket, cowboy hat, shirt and boots are required to make the look.

Organizing an adult party can sometimes require the services of a party planner if things start to escalate. The lavish events provided ice sculptures, table dancers, acrobats, ‘naked butlers’, photo booths, choreographed dance routines for guests and acts from abroad to ensure a good night for all.

However, more common are evenings with special themes, such as cooking parties, cocktail parties, fancy parties featuring Star Wars, James Bond or a particular decade. Save the date cards can be sent in advance. Printers, florists, make-up artists, caterers and costume designers are on speed dial, as are room managers who are expected to dress the event and provide gifts for guests at each table.

But what about other less extravagant ways to ensure a great entertainment experience? I know of people who bought their new home, painted it and asked friends to come over and write messages or graffiti on their bare walls. Afterwards, everyone ate a hot dinner while laughing at their handiwork, and the walls were a long-term confirmation of those friendships.

Or a safari dinner, where everyone who lives nearby cooks a meal and the dinner moves from house to house during the meal, ensuring less individual cost and a fun, varied evening.

I’m booked for ‘WeTalk’ parties where the host or hostess provides drinks and nibbles and I introduce topics for discussion, giving guests the chance to talk about relevant, poignant things, share ideas and leave feeling they’ve had a good time, including time with the benefit of some additional mini therapy.

For me, on my last two decades of birthdays I invited family and friends over for a sit-down meal, the last with ‘George Michael’ providing the entertainment. It was great fun with lots of positive feedback, so much so that I was tempted to do it again next year, rather than wait another ten years. That was until I realized how quickly a year goes by. Repeating something too soon or too often can reduce the excitement, potentially making something special quite exhausting.

Are the best parties so good because they rarely happen? Are we in danger of slipping into a “how will I/they improve on last year” mindset, where it all becomes pressured and competitive? Also, are parties more about place than occasion, more about elements than people and relationships?

Remember those old style parties where everyone gravitated towards the kitchen, drinking beer and mulled wine, balancing the odd sausage roll or cheese and pineapple on a stick! Everyone had a lot of fun.

Have we lost the essence of what parties are for, the reasons why we enjoy them? An important motivating factor is the desire to gather and celebrate, while taking the pressure off the host(s) so that they too can enjoy themselves. While your life may not always be a party, your party definitely should be!
