Wookey Hole Caves Review – Top Somerset Tourist Destination or Commercialised "Hole"? Part One

What is Wookey Hole?

Wookey Hole, while it sounds like a potentially rude reference to a certain Star Wars character’s body part, is actually a small village located in Wells County, Somerset, England.

The village itself is a picturesque place, with a variety of residences, pubs and hotels that are styled and decorated in harmony with the surroundings.

Within the village of Wookey Hole there is also a visitor attraction called…Wookey Hole!

A little background on our party members

It is probably useful to mention the number in our party and their ages before proceeding further. My wife and I in our 30s, my son who was 2 when I wrote this. My mother-in-law who was…a little older than us. My wife’s niece is 10 years old and my wife’s grandmother who classifies as an older member of the British population.

So there was a mix of ages and physical abilities present at the party. Let’s continue?

Entrance and first thoughts

Tickets were 16 per adult, 11 for discounts, and children under 3 entered for free. This suited my family to the core, as my son was only 2 years old at the time, so a definite tick to enter the attraction costs.

The cash register was also a pastry shop. I thought this was genius from a business point of view. And the large number of flavors to choose from ensured that everyone gets the ice cream they want. I decided on the Sticky Toffee Pudding flavor, and I have to say it was one of the tastiest ice cream cones I’ve had in a while.

So now our tummies were grateful for a snack, it was time to get into the actual grounds of Wookey Hole.

Easily accessible?

There are stairs and ramp access to the park, so pushing my son in his pushchair was a pleasant experience unlike the stroller vs. stairs debacle that is all too common at other tourist attractions.

There was a small path to cross from the entrance area to the main park, but that was nothing to worry about.

When we crossed the road, the whole park opened before us. We decided to head straight for the caves. It wasn’t until we entered the park grounds that we saw the rather troubling walk ahead.

It was about 300 meters from where we were standing, up a fairly steep hill to get to the start of the cave tour. We were greeted by a spectacular view of the gorge that surrounds us, several wooden bridges and a view of the attractions far below that we will visit after touring the cave. By the end, Lisa’s grandma was looking a little out of breath, but not as bad as I thought she would be. I was a little out of breath myself because my son is not the easiest object to push up a steep hill.

Time to see the caves!

We reached the beginning where the tour started. The tour guide was standing there, looking professional with his torch and the way he dressed.

No one seemed to be there, the entrance to the caves was chained. So I asked him when the tour started. He told us in the next 6 or 7 minutes. So we decided to hang out.

Within 5 minutes there were 4 or 5 more families, a few couples and a few people waiting to enter the caves with us.

At this point, the guide turned to us and gave us a brief overview of what to expect inside the caves.

We have been informed of the following things that are important for visitors to know;

  • Pushchairs were not allowed to enter the caves, if they were collapsible then we could carry them around the caves with us (or make a long time go back to the beginning to check the pushchair…no thanks!)
  • The surfaces would be slippery, there would be handrails inside to help the weak or unstable.
  • At their lowest point, “head clearance” was 4 feet off the ground.
  • No flash photography so as not to disturb the bats (my wife’s niece was quite disturbed by this).

We looked through the pamphlet and souvenir booklet before going to the caves, none that information was in there, so now we had;

  • An unnerved grandmother who didn’t like the idea of slipping or bending over to negotiate a cave tour.
  • A rather frightened niece, the very idea of bats in a cave did not sit well with her.
  • A bit annoyed dad (me), knowing that I would have left my son’s pushchair at the entrance to the park.

Nevertheless, we continued with the tour…

Wookey Hole Cave Tour

The cave guide was very knowledgeable about the caves, their formation and geological activities. I got the feeling he wasn’t much of a childish person because every time there was some noise in our group, he would pause with a rather stern look on his face and then continue with the rest of the tour.

He spun the story of “Wookey Witch”a local fairy tale dating back centuries and involving a local monk from a monastery and the casting of a witch into hell through the network of caves we toured.

How high?

Slippery floors have nearly taken my wife’s grandmother’s condition more than a few times. Navigating the cave network from a tall man’s point of view was difficult to say the least. As we were told, there were many low roofs inside the cave. Add to this equation carrying my son’s stroller, let’s just say it made things interesting.

At the other end of the network was a series of catwalks suspected to be within the walls of the caves, which reached a height of 150 feet in places. As my mother-in-law and I both suffer from acrophobia (fear of heights), it would be quite useful to know about this part of the tour before it’s up to us first.

I thought I did pretty well, I even looked down the catwalk to see how high we actually were. The response was very high indeed. But for some strange reason, this didn’t bother me. Maybe because holding my son’s hand during the tour reminded me that I was a dad, so it was my duty to be brave and fearless… It seemed to work too!

End of the cave tour

Eventually we reached the end of the cave tour, back to glorious sunshine and a plate to collect tips for the guide. I left a tip and shook his hand, thanking him for a pleasant and informative tour.

We have enjoyed our date so far. The caves were interesting although a bit slippery. The weather was great and we only drove 15 miles to get there from our vacation home.

In the second part of my Wookey Hole review, I will comment on the other attractions and offer you my honest and sincere opinion on the place as a tourist destination.
