What’s the Difference Between a Detox and Cleanse?

What started all the questions about detox and cleansing?

Since Spiro and I just finished the Beachbody Ultimate Reset, many people have asked us what the diet is all about. In short, it’s a three-week program that eliminates all toxins from your body and ends with eating a raw, organic diet. Each week you take different supplements to support the transition. I know what you’re saying, forget it. It was hard, but we both feel amazing and actually want to keep eating this way. It was a great experience and we are really happy that we did it. The reset was basically a detox diet. In this post I will explain the difference between a detox and a cleanse and I will follow up with posts that go into more detail about the different types of detoxes and cleanses that exist.

Detox and Cleanse

For centuries, cleansing the body has been an integral part of our rituals for good health and well-being. Various processes that take place in the body and substances that enter it create toxins that pose a threat to your internal system. Harmful substances include cholesterol, irritants, excess fat, sugar, smoking, biological waste and synthetic chemicals. Some or all of them enter your body from various sources such as polluted environment, processed food and unhealthy habits. If these harmful substances continue to accumulate in your system, they can put you at risk of developing a fatal disease.

There’s a very fine line between detoxing (or “detoxing” as it’s called) and cleansing. People usually use these terms interchangeably to mean that they are trying to get rid of waste or dirt from the body. However, detoxification and cleansing are very different processes. Although both aim to help the body rid itself of toxins, they work on different parts of the body and on different toxins.

Detoxification

Detoxification refers to the body’s natural process of eliminating or neutralizing toxic materials from cells, tissues, organs, and the bloodstream. It works to remove toxins from the bloodstream, various organs of the body, the skin, and also the liver and kidneys. Liver or kidney detoxification is generally followed by cleansing procedures to ensure better results. Detoxification includes ingredients included in a person’s daily diet. These dietary inclusions are specifically designed to eradicate toxins. Detoxification, as a relatively simple process, can be part of your daily regimen. Detoxification targets chemicals, smoke, metals, pollutants, stones, and even fatty deposits that build up in the body and cause harm. Incorporating a few detoxifying ingredients into your daily diet has positive benefits, including better health, wellness, beautiful skin, pain relief, and less anxiety or depression caused by hormonal imbalances. Detox can be incorporated into your daily life simply by choosing fruits, vegetables and fiber-rich foods. Avoid eating processed and/or packaged foods; chips, cereals, ready-made frozen diet meals, etc.

Cleaning

The cleanse targets the digestive tract (the organ from the mouth to the anus) and does the typical job of cleansing the colon. Cleaning uses a specific program or component for the procedure, e.g. teas, fiber supplements, etc. It targets waste matter, fungi (such as Candida), parasites and harmful bacteria in your gut. Both detoxification and cleansing have several similar benefits. Cleansing is a sure fire process to keep your digestive tract and colon healthy and your body disease free.

Our experience from Ultimate Reset

I have to say that since Spiro and I did our Reset (detox), we have no cravings for us. We ate very satisfying food that was very satisfying, but we still “thought” we should eat something else. Most of us were raised to eat meat, fish, etc. and to eat salad, vegetables, potatoes, rice, etc. With the reset, we learned to focus on all the vegetables first and add them from there. Now that we can actually eat other foods, we don’t want to. Funny, the first day we finished, Spiro got one of our favorite things; Costco Rotisserie Chicken. You know what? It didn’t hit like we thought it would. Crazy huh? In just three short weeks, our taste buds have changed and whole foods are what we crave. Now we just have to work on changing our mindset. 😉 That’s always the hardest part. So what do you think? Think you’re ready for a cleanse or detox?

A final note: It is recommended that you speak with your doctor before starting any program. They can help you determine which one is best for you and how often to join such a program.
