Revolution 2020 – A Book Review

The story begins in the backdrop of Varanasi (also called Kashi or Banaras) where people believe that their sins will be washed away on the banks of the holy river Ganga. Gopal, an 8-year-old boy, who comes from a middle-class Indian family, steals a piece of chocolate cake from his classmate Aarti’s lunch box and is punished by the teacher. Aarti, who comes from a sort of bureaucratic and political family, realizes that Gopal doesn’t have a lunch box because his mother died when he was young, befriends Gopal and shares lunch with him every afternoon. They become fat friends. Raghav is a bright rich student who is also Aarti’s friend. She likes Raghav for his smartness and appreciates his hard work.

The next part of the story begins 10 years later.

All three friends are impatiently waiting for their results in order to enter a prestigious university, because their future depends on their results. Raghav gets a good rank in the IIT-JEE exam and Gopal fails to pass. Aarti is inspired to become an Air Hostess and just wants to complete her degree because of her parents. She is pursuing a course in hospitality management, while Raghav chooses to join a top college in Varanasi. Gopal’s father dreamed of getting his son admitted to IIT and though his financial condition is bad, he makes Gopal take the exam once again even at the cost of losing an entire year. To fulfill his father’s wish, Gopal agrees to go to Kota for further training. Sad to part with his hometown and his love Aarti, he accepts a new life in Kota where he finds it difficult to find the right place for a coach and the motivation to study alone without friends in a foreign place. He soon realizes that he cannot be away from Aarti anymore and tries to stay in touch with her. Aarti, being a practical girl, has found friendship in Raghav and is slowly drifting away from Gopal. Depressed by the loss of Aarti’s love, Gopal’s studies are affected and he goes into bad company. After 6 months, Aarti comes back into his life, motivating him to come out with flying colours. He is recovering and finishing his exams. Fortunately, he returns home to Varanasi and Aarti comes back into his life. But this brief happiness ends too quickly for the hard truth to be revealed when the exam results are announced. Gopal’s failure to get a seat in an engineering college takes his father’s life. Dreaming of a secure future, his father had many debts and now that he was gone, Gopal did not know what to do. Gopal decided to take a part-time job and join the studies in one of the cheap colleges. On his way to a career fair where all the colleges had their own booths to woo students, he meets Sunil, an agent, who trusts him when he tells him about his plight. Another interesting fact is that Gopal’s father together with his brother owned a property which is in a court dispute over the land. Gopal suggested his father to sell the 30 acre land, but his father was emotionally attached to his ancestral property. Sunil takes Gopal to the local MLA Shukla and he encourages the idea of starting his own college on the land, with the help of necessary capital, infrastructure and other formalities from the MLA.

Gopal’s stars shine on him and he agrees to a contract to manage and look after the affairs and administration of the future ‘GangaTech’ college. Meanwhile, Raghav pursues his passion for journalism and spends quality time as a reporter in ‘Dainik’ newspaper along with his professional course. Aarti’s desire to become an air hostess is still far away, but she enjoys catering. While Raghav is busy with work, Aarti feels lonely and spends time with Gopal. Whenever Aarti is with Gopal, he forgets the whole world and somehow hopes that one day she will leave Raghav and come to him. Their secret rendezvous takes place on opposite banks of the river where the two hang out, away from the crowd and as time passes, they both grow closer. On one such occasion, Gopal tries to kiss her and she foils the scene, ending their friendship. Gopal then gets busy building his college, meeting all kinds of people, doing business, taking care of officials (bribing) and in 3 years the college is ready. New appointments of faculties, deans, etc. are in place and all arrangements for the grand opening have been made. Raghav is on a very big mission and a day before the opening of the college, he publishes an article by MLA Shukla, revealing all his dealings, corruption money, the Ganga scam he is involved in and the link of turning his black money into white through this new college. Gopal is devastated when he hears this, when all the media point to Shukla. The government pressures Shukla to step down and he is sent to jail, leaving Gopal to deal with the situation alone. Somehow he manages to get a good admission from Dean Shrivastav and finally the faculty starts with a fairly good number in the first year. Raghav was then indirectly attacked by the MLA men and was sacked from ‘Dainik’. Gopal becomes rich, moves into a bungalow, owns a car and seems to enjoy luxury, while Raghav has lost his job, frustrated with his journalistic career, his parents also throw up their hands, and only Aarti is his moral support. But Raghav’s principles and ideologies are strong enough and he vows to start a revolution targeting the youth of Varnasi. Raghav starts digging into the dark world of ministers, gathering facts, evidence and evidence against them. He gets fully absorbed in bringing about a powerful revolution by starting his own news paper and trying to distribute it to the smaller masses along with the daily newspapers. Once again, Aarti longs for friendship and Gopal has open arms. Each of them find comfort and solace by talking about everyday things and Raghav slowly drifts into oblivion. One day, Gopal comes as a guest to the hotel where Aarti works and they spend the night together. Unaware of Gopal’s progress, Raghav’s sincere struggle, his fight for justice and his preparation for revolution reaches a climax when people start supporting him. MLA Shukla hints Gopal to enter politics by marrying Aarti whose grandfather is well known in politics. When Aarti agrees to break up with Raghav, Gopal takes the lead to inform him. But as fate has chosen this very moment, Raghav’s honest struggle and integrity come in the way. Despite his miserable condition, he agrees to travel hundreds of kilometers to investigate the problems of the villagers and write in his articles. Gopal was deeply moved. He creates a deliberate misunderstanding between himself and Aarti, showing that he is a womanizer. Aarti is seriously injured. Gopal recommends Raghav’s name in ‘Dainik’, gets him a job and after marrying Aarti, Raghav plunges into politics as a son-in-law with his ‘Revolution 2020’ ideologies. The author concludes with Aarti marrying Raghav, showing her support for the truth and the revolution against corruption has begun.

The true combination of all the qualities incorporated into the fusion of today’s generation is the highlight of this book. In my opinion, Raghav is a true radical reformist who believes in bringing changes at the grass root level to make this world (India) a better place to live. Gopal is also a significant character, no matter what comes, he never loses the goodness and innocence that is in us. MLA Shukla is the epitome of an Indian politician and his favorite line in the entire book “I’ll sort it out” really grabbed my attention. He is also Gopal’s mentor. As for Shukla, it is up to the reader to perceive him as good or bad and whether he should be encouraged or not in society. The remaining characters also played an important role and shine in the society of Raghav, Gopal and Aarti including the place of Varanasi which is a tourist place.
