Welcome to Freedomville

Preface: A fun bedtime story provides some basic life lessons for your children, such as work ethic, honesty, responsibility and simple business principles. Recommended age: 6-10.

Once upon a time there was a nice young man named Andy Workman who lived with his parents in Freedomville, a small town with a school, library, fire station, police and many stores. In Freedomville, everyone had an equal chance to work and live as they pleased.

Andy was proud of his school. His teachers considered him special because he learned lessons quickly, studied at night, and always finished his homework on time. He also loved to read and regularly went to the library or visited the local bookstore. He loved books about adventure, travel to foreign countries and humor. However, his favorite books were about mechanics and how to make or fix things.

Andy’s parents thought he was special too. Although they didn’t have much, they took pride in their small home and kept it clean. Everyone worked hard around the house. Andy’s job was to mow the lawn and sweep the garage. Although Andy was only eleven years old, he did a very good job. So much so that his father would give him a small weekly allowance that Andy would save.

The neighbors were so impressed with Andy mowing his father’s lawn that one by one they started hiring him to mow their lawns as well. Andy worked hard and did a good job that impressed the neighbors. He would never let them down and the neighbors paid Andy for his hard work which he would save with his pocket money.

One day, Andy’s dad asked him, “What are you going to do with all your money?”

“I’m thinking of a few things dad; first, I want to buy a new bike to ride to school. And I want to buy Mr. Smithers old lawnmower that I want to fix up.”

“But then you’ll have two lawnmowers,” said Andy’s dad, “you can’t push two lawnmowers, can you?”

“That’s right. My friend Tommy will work with me and we’ll be able to mow more lawns and make more money.”

So Andy bought his new bike and an old lawnmower that he fixed up.

Soon after, Andy and his friend Tommy mowed all the lawns on his block and earned a lot of money for their efforts. Andy saved his money, but occasionally he would buy a book to read.

Andy’s new bike was big, shiny and fast. Everyone at school loved it, including Sammy Servant, the class bully. Sammy was bigger than Andy and would scare a lot of kids. He would often ask the other kids for lunch money for his cousin Harry Havenot, a lazy bully who was smaller than Sammy and not very smart.

When Sammy spotted the new bike, he called Andy over.

“I noticed your bike Andy,” Sammy said. “You know my cousin Harry only has an old bike that doesn’t work well.”

Andy knew about the worthless bike that was the joke of the school.

Sammy continued, “You seem to be doing pretty well with your lawns and you have more money than Harry and I. I think it would be only fair to trade your bike for Harry’s, don’t you?” and he looked menacingly at Andy.

Of course, Andy didn’t think it was fair, but he was afraid of fighting Sammy, so he traded his bike for Harry’s.

Andy somehow managed to get the old bike home, but it wasn’t easy because the chain kept falling off. When he got home, he took the bike apart in his garage, repaired it and cleaned it. He even painted it. It seemed to Andy that no one had ever taken care of the bike. When he was done, it didn’t look too bad. He drove well and was no longer an embarrassment.

Andy didn’t hear his father come up behind him in the garage. “Whose bike is this Andy?” he asked, “And where is your new one?”

Andy gulped as he was ashamed of letting Sammy Servant bully him. “Well dad, it’s like this…” and he admitted the problem to him.

“Well, this will never work,” said the father and called the school principal to discuss the problem. When he was done he said to Andy, “I spoke to your manager and he assured me that he will fix the problem tomorrow. You will get your bike back.”

Andy was delighted.

The next day, the headmaster made Sammy and Harry return Andy’s bike which was already worn out because Harry had carelessly dropped it. “We are sorry!” they said reluctantly under the headmaster’s glare.

As the boys changed bikes, Harry was surprised at how well his old bike looked and performed, much better than the day before. Although he liked his old bike now, he still mistreated it and in just a few days he had written it off like before.

Andy took his bike home and had it shined like new again. He had kept it safely locked away from Harry ever since.

There was no more trouble until the last week of the school year when Sammy cornered Andy again. “Andy, you’re a good student, aren’t you? You get nothing but A’s, do you?”

Andy agreed that it was.

Sammy continued, “Well, Harry has a problem. He might fail and have to repeat fifth grade. I’m sure you don’t want that to happen, do you? During the last test of the week, I want you to let Harry copy your answers. And better let him or you’ll have trouble from me.”

Andy was aware of the dangers of cheating on tests. He could be suspended from school and face other punishments, not to mention failing his parents.

“No, I won’t allow it,” Andy said surprisingly defiantly, “I’ve been working too hard for my grades and I’m not going to risk ruining my record just because Harry didn’t do his work. It’s one thing if you wanted my help studying for a test, but it’s quite another to cheat.” Andy stared at the two of them until Sammy finally gave up. Good thing, too, because Andy was ready to fight them, win or lose.

Many years have passed and Andy has grown up to be a fine young man. His lawn mowing service made a lot of money which he used to grow his business. In a few short years, Andy’s company had several employees and mowed most of the lawns in Freedomville. The company also helped pay his way to a local college where he earned a degree in business.

Sammy and Harry are also adults. Harry didn’t do well at school and ended up dropping out and becoming homeless. Sammy graduated high school and went to work for the local government where he enforced local rules and regulations, such as putting up street signs and making sure businesses like Andy’s didn’t make too much noise while they were operating.

Every now and then, Sammy would accuse one of Andy’s employees of breaking the rules, but if he paid him some money, he wouldn’t report him. Of course, the employee didn’t break any rules at all, it was just Sammy’s way of trying to get some extra money. When Andy heard about this, he went to Sammy and asked him to stop bothering his employees or he would tell the police. Sammy gave up but was angry that he couldn’t scare Andy anymore.

Jealous of Andy’s success, Sammy comes up with the idea to cause him more trouble. He proposed a new law that would tax people who own lawnmowers, and that the money would be used to support the city’s homeless poor, like his cousin Harry.

Andy didn’t like this idea. If it becomes law, his valuable company would have to pay loafers like Harry. He didn’t think this was fair. Andy told all his friends and customers about the unfair law. If it passes, it would have to raise lawn care prices. Andy was so persistent that when election time came around, Sammy’s tax bill didn’t pass and everything was back to normal.

Soon after, Andy was walking downtown when he ran into Sammy and Harry. Sammy was angry that Andy helped defeat his tax plan. Before he could say anything Andy reached into his pocket and pulled out some money which he gave to Harry. This surprised both Sammy and Harry.

“Why did you give him money? I thought you were cheap and greedy,” Sammy asked.

“I’m neither,” explained Andy, “I don’t mind helping people when I can, it’s my decision and no one else’s, but I refuse to let anyone tell me how to spend my hard-earned money. none of your business.”

Harry complained, “You’re luckier than us Andy.”

“Luck has nothing to do with it guys. Was I lucky that I got good grades in school or because I studied hard? Was I lucky that I built my business from scratch or did I work hard? I think the answer is obvious. Do you believe that the world owes you a life. It doesn’t. Every day is a blessing, we can make of it what we want. We can succeed or fail, but we must at least take responsibility and try to do the best things. And if we fail, let’s hope that someone will lend us a hand , but it’s up to each of us to get up and move on. If you want something, you just have to work hard to earn it. It’s that simple.”

Sammy and Harry began to think about what Andy had said. They knew that they had tried to deceive life and realized that it was telling the truth. And if Andy could do it, why couldn’t they? “Is it too late to change?” they asked Andy.

“It’s never too late to start. Would you like to work for me in my lawn business? I promise you nothing but hard work and the benefits that come with it, like a good salary and some self-respect.”

“When do we start?” they asked Andy.

“And now?” and they shook hands.
